Brian Douglas, executive officer of the Lighting Council of Australia, says the lighting industry is talking to government agencies about “product stewardship”.
“The cost of recycling fluorescent lamps is extremely expensive compared to their original cost and this is a significant factor in recycling,” says Douglas.
He says CFLs contain at least 5 milligrams of mercury each.
The 2006 study also found that printed circuit boards in CFLs could be toxic to the environment.
From Junk Science…
As each CFL contains 5 milligrams of mercury, at the Maine “safety” standard of 300 nanograms per cubic meter, it would take 16,667 cubic meters of soil to “safely” contain all the mercury in a single CFL. While CFL vendors and environmentalists tout the energy cost savings of CFLs, they conveniently omit the personal and societal costs of CFL disposal.

Would the world be better off without religion?
That is the proposition that will be discussed next Tuesday as
the fourth instalment this year in the Herald’s Intelligence
Squared Australia (IQ2 Oz) series, presented at the City Recital
Hall in Sydney.
The forum will address the notion that “while the world’s
religions have inspired stunning acts of creation, they also have
been implicated in some of the darkest deeds in human history”.
The provocative series of six-part debates is aimed at raising
the level of public discourse on challenging issues.
The debate will be streamed live on smh.com.au and broadcast
nationally on the ABC.
But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case
that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and
by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon plays
only a minor role and is not the main cause of the recent
global warming. As Lord Keynes famously said, “When the
facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?”
